About Us

Cody Country Art League began informally in the late 1950s, when a nucleus of students from local artist Adolf Spohr’s painting class decided to exhibit their pieces.  At its first show in a local bank, patrons supported the organization so enthusiastically that a search for a large space was initiated.  The “old Kepford House,” circa 1905, on the corner of Sheridan Avenue and 9th Street, served temporarily as the art league’s headquarters.

Then, in 1964, the art league was incorporated and permanently headquartered in the former Buffalo Bill Museum,  along with the Cody Country Chamber of Commerce, after that facility was vacated by the Buffalo Bill Historical Society.

Among the art league’s primary fundraising efforts during the early years was an annual auction, which attracted pieces donated by several well known artists, including Harry Jackson, Bob Meyers, Nicholas Eggenhofer, Harold Hopkinson, Bill Matson, Mel Fillerup and Adolf Spohr.  In 1965, the auction raised more than $5,000.

Today, Cody Country Art League is still housed in the former Buffalo Bill Museum, 836 Sheridan Avenue, a building on the National Register of Historic Places.  Membership has grown to more than 250, and annual sales total more than $70,000.  The organization offers ongoing and affordable education programs for all ages and abilities, and art league members are major contributors to community events.

Many successful professional and emerging artists who call Cody Country home have gained valuable knowledge and skills through the art league’s programs and people.
